Trees evergreen, trunk vertical, to 30 m, to 60 cm d.b.h. Bark of young trees grayish, smooth, of old trees grayish brown, minutely longitudinally striate. Branchlets terete, densely appressed brownish pannose. Leaves imparipinnate, 15-20(-35) cm; petiole 2-6.3 cm; petiole and rachis densely appressed pubescent; leaflets 5-7, often 7 near inflorescence; petiolule 5-9 mm, pubescent; blades oblong or elliptic, (5-)8-13(-20) × (2.5-)4-5.5(-8.5) cm, leathery or thinly so, ± yellowish appressed pannose abaxially, glabrous, sometimes villosulous at midvein, adaxially, base rounded or broadly cuneate, apex obtuse, retuse, or acute, rarely acuminate or caudate; midvein raised abaxially, impressed adaxially, lateral veins 16 or 17 pairs, angled 50° with midvein, raised. Panicles terminal or axillary, large, to ca. 19 cm, branches to 20 cm at base of inflorescence; peduncle and pedicel densely appressed grayish brown tomentulose; pedicel 2-3 mm. Calyx campanulate; teeth dimorphic, upper 2 triangular, others lanceolate, densely brownish velvety. Corolla white; standard suborbicular, shortly stipitate; wings and keel oblong. Stamens unequal. Ovary densely appressed short grayish brown velvety; ovules 2; style glabrous. Legumes indehiscent or tardily dehiscent, broadly ovate, suborbicular, or obovate, 3-4.5 × 2.4-3 cm (excluding stipe), swollen around seed, beak oblique, stipe 3-4 mm; valves thinly leathery, fragile, densely appressed brownish velvety; calyx persistent. Seed 1(or 2), red or carmine, rounded or elliptic, 1.3-2 × 1.2-1.7 cm; hilum 1.5-1.8 cm, over 1/2 circumference of seed. Fl. Jun-Jul, fr. Oct-Dec.
