堇菜报春 jin cai bao chun

Herbs perennial. Leaves forming a rosette; petiole 6--18 cm, densely fulvous pilose; leaf blade orbicular to broadly cordate or reniform, 4--13 X 5--15 cm, abaxially pilose along veins, otherwise nearly glabrous, adaxially pubescent, base deeply cordate, margin dentate-lobulate, apex rounded; lobules broadly triangular, margin denticulate. Scapes 20--40 cm, densely fulvous pilose; umbels 1 or 2, superimposed, 3--12-flowered; bracts linear to linear-lanceolate, 3--10 mm. Pedicel 1.5--2.5 cm, elongating to 3(--5) cm in fruit, sparsely pilose or glabrescent. Flowers heterostylous. Calyx narrowly campanulate, 7--12 mm, glabrous or nearly so, parted to slightly below middle; lobes lanceolate; veins 3--5. Corolla rose-lilac to purple; tube 1--1.4 cm; limb 1.5--2 cm wide; lobes obovate, emarginate. Pin flowers: stamens near middle of corolla tube; style ca. as long as tube. Thrum flowers with positions reciprocal. Capsule globose, included in calyx. Fl. May-Jun.
