Plants to 60 cm tall. Stems usually 2- or 3-branched, ca. 35 cm underground. Leaves ovate, 0.5-1.5 cm X (3-)5-7 mm, glabrous on both sides. Inflorescences 9-16 cm; bract long ovate or ovate-lanceolate, ca. 1.5-2.5 cm X 4-8 mm, along with bractlets densely white villous abaxially; bractlets linear-lanceolate, (1.3-)1.5-2 cm. Pedicel very short to obsolete. Calyx campanulate, 1.8-2.5 cm, irregularly 5-parted; lobes unequal, acuminate. Corolla yellow, becoming pale brown-yellow when dry, tubular-campanulate, (2.5-)3.2-3.8 cm, apex 5-lobed; lobes 6-7 mm X 0.9-1.2 cm. Filaments 1.3-2 cm, along with corolla tube yellow villous adaxially; anthers ovoid, 3-3.5 mm, villous, base mucronate. Ovary subglobose, 6-8 mm in diam. Style (1.2-)1.5-2 cm. Fruit and seeds unknown. Fl. May-Jun.
