Plants perennial, densely tufted, 25--45 cm tall. Stems terete, 1--1.5 mm in diam. Basal leaves 1 or 2, cauline leaves 2; leaf sheath 3--7 cm, auricles narrow; leaf blade terete or somewhat laterally compressed, 5--15 cm × 1--2 mm, perfectly and distinctly septate, apex acute. Inflorescences with involucral bract leaflike, often shorter than inflorescence; heads usually many, hemispheric, 2--5 mm in diam., (2 or)3--6(or 7)-flowered. Perianth segments ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 2--2.4 mm, subequal or outer segments slightly longer than inner, margin scarious, apex obtuse or acute. Stamens 6; filaments 1--1.1 mm; anthers 0.8--0.9 mm. Capsule black-brown to brown, shiny, trigonous oblong to trigonous ellipsoid, 2.6--3 mm, apex mucronate. Seeds subovoid to ellipsoid, ca. 0.5 mm, reticulate. Fl. Jun--Jul, fr. Jul--Sep.
Wet grasslands by rivers, swamps, wet places; 700--1400 m. Hebei, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Nei Mongol [Mongolia, Russia].
