Plants 30--60 cm tall. Rhizome creeping, moniliform, 1--1.5 cm thick. Stem ± zigzagged, hispidulous distally. Leaves 5--9; petiole 5--6 mm; leaf blade oblong or ovate-elliptic, 9--11 × 4.5--5.2 cm, both surfaces laxly hispidulous. Inflorescence a panicle, 3--20 cm; rachis pubescent. Flowers solitary; pedicel 2--3 mm, elongate in fruit. Perianth white to purplish red; segments connate proximally, forming a tube 1--2 mm, lobes ovate-lanceolate or oblong, 2--4 × 1.5--2.5 mm. Filaments flat, widened at base, ca. 0.5 mm; anthers small. Style 1--1.5 mm, subequaling ovary; stigma 3-lobed. Berries 5--6 mm in diam., 1- or 2-seeded. Fl. May--Jun, fr. Aug--Sep.
