Plants small to medium-sized, often glaucous green, gregarious or in loose tufts. Stems erect, often branched; central strand present. Leaves lanceolate, subulate to acuminate; margins usually plane, serrate near the apex; costa single, strong, percurrent to shortly excurrent, in transverse section, with dorsal and ventral stereid bands; cells short, quadrate to short-rectangular; alar cells not differentiated. Autoicous. Setae elongate, straight; capsules erect, elliptical to cylindric; peristome teeth 16, divided nearly to the base, densely papillose. Calyptrae cucullate. Spores spherical, papillose.
