Plants small, slender, yellowish green, in loose tufts. Stems erect, simple, rarely branched. Leaves erect, appressed, narrowly lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, gradually to abruptly tapered from a narrow or oblong-ovate, somewhat sheathing base to a short, narrowly and bluntly acute or subulate acumen; margins plane, entire throughout; costa single, strong, rather broad at leaf base, subpercurrent to shortly excurrent, filling most of the subula; upper leaf cells rhombic to hexagonal, thin-walled, smooth; basal cells rectangular, thin-walled; alar cells not differentiated. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves large, highly sheathing at base, abruptly narrowed to a short, setaceous point. Setae short, straight; capsules emergent or shortly exserted, globose to ellipsoidal; opercula obliquely short-rostrate or not clearly differentiated; annuli weakly developed or not well differentiated; peristome absent. Calyptrae cucullate. Spores spherical, small, smooth.
There are three species of Tristichium in the world. One species is known from China.
