Perennial, often pilose herbs, usually with thick woody rootstock. Leaves alternate, undivided-serrulate or 3-4-pinnatipartite or pinnatisect. Capitula small to mediocre, heterogamous, radiate or not, long-peduncled to sometimes sessile, borne in terminal corymbs or solitary at the apices. Involucre oblong-cylindrical to depressed subglobose or hemispherical, phyllaries without or with narrow to broadly hyaline margins. Receptacle ± flat or convex, with lanceolate or oblong, scarious paleae. Ray-florets female, with 3-dentate, white or yellow ligules. Disc-florets bisexual, with ± compressed, regularly 5-dentate corolla tube. Cypselas oblong to obovoid, compressed, glabrous, wingless, bald, apically enveloped by pouched bases of corolla tube.

A genus of 115 species, distributed in Eurasia and Mediterranean region. Represented by 5 species in Pakistan.
