Trees up to 18 m or more tall, monoecious or dioecious. Branches dimorphic, long shoots with scattered leaves, short shoots bearing whorled leaves. Male and female cones large, erect. Scales of female cones overlapping, deciduous. Seeds 2, with a long membranous wing.
4 species, distributed from the Atlantic to Algeria and Afghanistan eastward to Nepal. Represented by 1 species in Pakistan.
