Annual or perennial herbs, often with glandular hairs. Leaves ovate to lanceolate, elliptic or obovate to oblong. Inflorescence of lax cymes or terminal cymose heads. Sepals 5, free, with scarious margins. Petals 5, bilobed at the apex. Stamens 10. Styles 3 or 5. Capsule cylindric, membranous, exserted from the calyx, dehiscing by twice the number of teeth as styles, teeth flat, revolute or with revolute margins. Seeds tuberculate.

A large cosmopolitan genus with 60 species. Represented in Pakistan by 8 species.
