Monoecious evergreen trees. Leaves of older branches scale‑like, closely appressed to stem, opposite, decussate. Male cones small, solitary at the tips of branches. Female cones woody at maturity, composed of 4‑12 peltate scales. Seeds compressed or angular, winged.
12‑15 species, mainly Mediterranean, but also N. America & Asia. Represented in Pakistan by 4 cultivated species.
