Dioecious shrubs and trees. Leaves alternate, entire. Flowers 4-5-merous. Calyx reflexed in fruit. Male flowers with stamens in 2 rows. Styles 1-6, ± united at the base, stigmas capitate. Berry globose.
A large genus of c. 200 species. Only 2 species are found in Pakistan, one cultivated and the other probably naturalised.
Species dubia Burkill, (Working List Pl. Baluch. 46.1909) records Diospyros tomentosa Roxb. without locality and collector. I have not seen any material of this species from Baluchistan; the record needs to be confirmed.
