Caespitose perennials. Stem straight or base ascending, with 4-7 elongated internodes, pubescent above. Leaves about as long as internodes; sheaths papillose or pubescent; ligule present; blades more or less pubescent. Inflorescence 3-4 overlapping spikes. Spikes with spirally arranged glumes. Flowers bisexual, perianth bristles (or scales) present or absent, stigmas 3. Nut with persistent style base.
A genus with c. 30 speices, distributed in warm regions; represented in Pakistan by one species.
