Branched herbs. Leaves simple, pseudo-verticillate or alternate or basal, stipulate. Flowers small, in axillary clusters, cymes or racemes. Sepals 5, persistent. Stamens 3-5, rarely more; staminodes occasional. Ovary 3-5 locular, with many ovules on axile placentas. Stigmas 3. Capsule 3-5 locular, membranous, dehiscing loculicidally. Seeds several, rarely 1 in each locule, reniform.

A genus of 20 species, tropical and sub-tropical. Represented in W. Pakistan by 3 species.
