Annual or perennial herbs with hispid-glandular to vinous parts. Flowers racemose, actinomorphic. Calyx 5-fid, accrescent in fruit. Corolla tubular to campanulate-funnelform, the throat with 5 hairy appendages or scales; tube basally with a ring of hairs (annulus) or not; lobes 5; imbricate in bud, Stamens 5, included. Ovary prominently 4-lobed, style slender, stigma ± bilobed. Nutlets 4, transversely erect or subhorizontal, rugose, with a basal (ventral) scar, surrounded by a ring-like collar.
25 species found in Europe, Asia and N. Africa; mainly Mediterranean. Represented in Pakistan by 4-5 species.
For correct identification, flower and fruiting material is desirable along with adequate notes on the flower colour and size.
