Trees or shrubs, usually evergreen. Leaves alternate, entire. Flowers pedicellate, in corymbs or cymes. Sepals and petals free or basally united. Ovary 2-3-locular. Fruit a capsule; seeds usually embedded in a fleshy pulp, not winged.
Species c. 300 in the tropics and subtropics of the Old World. Only 1 species is found in Pakistan.
