Annuals. Leaf-blades filiform. Inflorescence a slender, flexuous spike with widely spaced, distichously arranged spikelets sunk in the joints of the tardily disarticulating angular rhachis. Spikelets with 1 fertile floret, laterally compressed, sessile. Terminal spikelet with 2 small 1-nerved glumes, the lower glume absent in the other spikelets; lemma linear-lanceolate, much longer than the glume, membranous, 1-nerved, with an apical awn; rhachilla sometimes prolonged and bearing a reduced sterile floret; stamen 1.
A monotypic genus in the Mediterranean region and the Middle East.
