Perennial or annual, usually strongly bitter aromatic herbs or shrublets with alternate, 1-3-pinnatisect leaves. Capitula discoid, homogamous, small and few-flowered, oblong, numerous in long panicles. Involucre oblong, 4-7-seriate, phyllaries unequal, imbricate, the outermost short and obtuse, the inner gradually longer and linear to linear-oblong. Receptacle conical, 2-3 mm long, usually acute, glabrous. Flowers bisexual, up to 15 per capitulum. Corolla yellow to purple, tubular, 5-toothed. Anthers with linear-lanceolate terminal appendages. Cypselas small, obovoid to ellipsoid, ± flattened or triquetrous, thin-walled. Pappus absent.

A moderate-sized genus comprising c. 135 species, distributed in Europe, and temperate Asia with main center of diversity in Central Asia, a few species in N America. Represented in Pakistan by 13 species.
