Leaves 30-120 cm in diameter, covered with 3-7 mm long, recurved spines on both the surfaces, ribs strong. Flowers 2-5 cm in diameter. Sepals 2-3 cm long, green, prickly outside, glabrous inside. Petals 1-2:0.2-0.7 cm, bright red to violet inside, green and shining outside. Stamens c. 5 mm long. Stigma discoid, depressed, concave with as many rays as carpels. Fruit 10-12 x 6-10 cm, ovoid-conical with persistent sepals.
Syntypes: Described from eastern India and China.
B-8 Kashmir: Dal Lake, Shanti Sarup s.n. 27.8.1939 (RAW), ibid., R.R. & I.D. Stewart 3245 (RAW). Distribution: Pakistan (Kashmir) eastwards. to India, China and Japan.
Seeds are eaten raw or roasted.
