12. Kobresia simpliciuscula (Wahlenb.) Mack., Bull. Torrey Bot. Club. 50: 349. 1923; (= Carex simpliciuscula Wahlenb. 1803).

In Asia this species is restricted to Siberia acc. to Egorova in Novit. Syst. Pl. Vasc. 20: 67-85, 1983. Nevertheless, Koyama (in Hara & al., Enum. Pl. Nepal 1: 96-120, 1978) reports it from Nepal as K. caricina Willd. (1805) and Kükenthal (1909) reported it from Chitral (Winterbottom 790); all records are here understood to refer to K. humilis. Doubtful record. In the treatment above the Kobresia species are treated collectively. Several species of Kobresia are known from a few specimens only and the variation is not sufficiently known. Two specimens in H (Miehe 44a and Miehe 1862) are left unnamed: 1. Gilgit: Above Hushe, pasture on gravel fans, screes and boulder fields, 3200-3300 m, Miehe 1862 (H). The plant forms small tufts with soft pale brown sheaths to 10 mm. It resembles somewhat K. fragilis C.B. Clarke which is mainly collected in the eastern Himalayas. However, it differs from that having bracts are all glume-like, shorter than their spike (not longer than inflorescence); female glumes are to 4.5 mm long (to 3 mm), utricles to 4 mm (to 3.5 mm). Nut was found c. 3.1 mm long; according to Noltie (Fl. Bhutan 3,1: 342) nut is 1.5-1.9 mm long, according to Kükenthal less than 3 mm. 2. Hazara: Upper Kaghan Valley, around Saiphul Muluk and Battakundi; subalpine pastures and scrub on SE- to e-facing slopes, 3200-3500 m, Miehe 44 a (H). The small specimen was separated from a Carex kashmirensis sample. The plant has unisexual female spikes resembling Kobresia vidua (Boott ex C.B. Clarke) Kükenthal, but utricles are larger (c. 4.6 mm) and not ciliate along nerves (cf. Noltie, Fl. Bhutan 3,1: 351). Male spikes not seen.
