5b. Polygonum cognatum subsp. chitralicum (Rech. f. Schiman-Czeika) Qaiser, Comb. & Stat. nov. (Fig. 12, A-C).

Polygonum chitralicum Rech. f. & Schiman-Czeika in Rech. f., Fl. Iran. 56: 66. 1968; R.R.Stewartk, l.c. 204.

Holotype: Pakistan: Chitral Golan Gol, 3750 m, Bowes Lyon 78 (W, Iso-BM!, K!).

P. cognatum subsp. chitralicum is restricted to high mountains of Hindukush range whereas the type subspecies is widely distributed. From the present record it appears the type subspecies is more common in Baltistan and Gilgit area in our region. Though the characters of number of styles and nuts of both the subspecies seem to be sufficient enough to merit them specific rank but C. C. Burtt 111 and Bowes-Lyon 8222 are intermediate between the two taxonomic entities. Therefore P. chitralicum is treated as subspecies of P. cognatum Meisn; Distribution: Endemic to Chitral.
