A branched shrub with glabrous, ± whitish branches. Leaves in fascicles, sessile to subsessile, 5-20 x 2.0-10 mm, obovate, spathulate, linear-oblong or linear-oblanceolate, obtuse, entire; ochrea membranous, produced at one or either side into a triangular appendage. Flowers axillary in loose clusters of 5-6, pedicellate, pedicel 4-8 mm long, usually inarticulate, sometimes inconspicuously articulate at the base. Perianth segments white-pinkish, 1.5-2 mm long, 0.5-1.5 mm broad, lanceolate to oblong. Stamens 1-1.3 mm long. Ovary 0.3-0.5 mm long. Fruits winged, 4-8 mm across, wings red, the upper lobe almost contiguous with the lower, nut brown, half the size of wing. Seeds brown.

An Irano-Turanian element extending into Saharo-Sindian region, grows on stony ground and sandy areas, from plains to 1900 m; Distribution: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Arctic and Subarctic Europe, India, China, Central Asia and N.America.
