According to Floderus (in Georg. Ann., Stockh. 1935: 306. 1935) S. denticulata hybridizes with S.karelinii and S.insignis and sometimes all the three species are involved. Catkins having male and female flowers are also not very rare.
As the two subspecies are differentiated on the basis of the ovary and fruit characters, the male plants are being listed separately.
