    Erect annual, 0.3-2 m tall, pubescent, hairs reddish brown. Leaf trifoliolate, leaflets 3-15 cm long, ovate-elliptical. Inflorescence a 5-8-flowered raceme. Calyx 5-7 mm long. Corolla violet, pink or white, 5.5-7 mm long. Fruit c. 2.5-8.5 cm long, 8-15 mm broad, 2-4-seeded. Seed 6-11 mm.

    Fl.Per.: March-May.

    Distribution: Pakistan, cultivated sparingly in plains; India; Sikkim; Nepal; Burma; E. Asia, a native of N. China.

    Soya bean is cultivated for the extraction of oil, for the edible seeds and for fodder.
