Vigna radiata var. sublobata (Roxb.) Verdc. in Kew Bull. 24:559. 1970.

  • Phaseolus sublobatus Roxb.
  • Phaseolus trinervis Wight & Arn.

Stem twining or prostrate. Leaflets frequently lobed. Pods and seeds usually smaller, towards the lower limits of the range given.

Lectotype: Roxburgh Icones ined. 1158 (K).

Distribution: Widely distributed in Tropical Asia and Africa; cultivated also in Asia, often found as an escape.

According to Verdcourt (Kew Bull.24:559.1970), this is undoubtedly the wild form of mung and probably of urd as well. As pointed out by Prain (J.As.Soc. Beng.66.422.1898) mung or green gram (Vigna radiata var. radiata) and urd or black gram [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper] are scarcely more than variants of one species, but have so long been kept separate that it is practical to continue to do the same.
