Up to 1.5 m. Leaves long petiolate, lamina c. 30 cm, lanceolate. Inflorescence borne separately from and often before the leaves. Fertile bracts green, 2-3 cm long, ovate; coma bracts pink. Flowers yellow. Fruit red. Seed black.
Fl. Per.: July-August.
Type: Cult. Bot. Gard. Calcutta, Coll. Colebrooke, R. Sone to Nagpur. No specimen known.
Distribution: Himalayan region: from Kumoan to Nepal, from 900-1210 m.
Cultivated to a small extent in Pakistan; the powdered rhizomes give the East Indian Arrowroot, which is used as a demulcent.
