Astragalus diopogon Bunge, Astrag. 1:70. 1868. 2:117.1869; Boiss., Fl.Or.2:313.1872; Ali in Biologia 7:61.1961.
Erect, woody stem covered with spiny leaf raches. Leaf paripinnately compound, petiole c. 8-18 mm long, rachis (excluding petiole) c. 1.8-3.0 cm long; pilose. Leaflets 10-14, c. 4-7 mm long, c. 2-2.5 mm broad, elliptic, entire, acute, midrib prolonged into an apiculate spine, pilose on both sides; petiolule less than 1 mm long; stipules lateral, adnate c. 8-11 mm long, pilose. Inflorescence an axillary peduncled raceme, peduncle c. 5-6 mm long, villous; bracts c. 6 mm long, pilose. Pedicel c. 0.5 mm long, bracteoles 2, c. 3.5 mm long. Calyx c. 11-12 mm long, villous, teeth c. 6.0-6.5 mm long. Vexillum c. 11-12 mm long. Mature fruit not seen.
Lectotype: E-4 Baluchistan, Hurbab mountain, Nichara, Stocks 915 (K).
Distribution: Pakistan (Baluchistan, N.W.F. Province).
Generally this species has been placed in the section Acanthophaca (subgenus Caprinus) but the proper place for this species seems to be in the subgenus Calycophysa near Astragalus congestus Baker.
