Juncus kotschyi Boiss., Diagn. ser. 1.7:101. 1846.

  • Juncus acutiflorus auct. non Gay
  • Juncus fontanesii subsp. kotschyi (Boiss.) Snog.
  • Juncus fontanesii var. kotschyi (Boiss.) Buchen.
  • Juncus prismatocarpus* auct. non R.Br.
  • Juncus pyramidatus var. kotschyi (Boiss.) Boiss.

Similar to the previous species but flowering heads globose on shorter peduncles, somewhat larger perianth segments and capsules more acute. Differs from Juncus fontanesii Gay (s.st.) by the absence of stolons and plants shorter (10-25 cm tall).

    Type: Kotschy 466 (G,BM,K).

Distribution: Pakistan (Baluchistan), Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Lebanon.

Stewart (l.c.) placed specimens of this species under 3 different species (see synonymy given above). Juncus acutiflorus Ehrh. ex Hoffm. is a taller species with capsules having 12 seeds only and tepals have awn-like points. Nasir 2815 cited for this species by Stewart is no doubt Juncus kotschyi (with capsules having c 30 seeds). Snogerup (l.c.) also keeps it under his Juncus fontanesii subsp. kotschyi (Boils.) Snog. The other 2 gatherings (Lace 131 and Stewart 783) cited under Juncus acutiflorus also seem cases of misidentification. Same is the case of Jafri & Akbar 1763 cited under Juncus fontanesii by Stewart (l.c.39); it belongs to Juncus kotschyi. However, there is every possibility of occurrence of true Juncus fontanesii in our area. The other 2 gatherings cited under Juncus fontanesii by Stewart (l.c. 40) also belongs to Juncus kotschyi (see Snog., l.c. 25 also). It is, therefore, evident that specimens cited under all the allied species need checking and probebly they all belong here.
