1 Low grow ing caespitose herbs. Stem 6-8 cm long. Leaves 6-15 paired, leaflets 6-10 toothed, terminal leaflets 4-5.5 x 3-4 mm, greyish tomentose below.   15 Potentilla commutata
+ Tall herbs, stem 20-50 cm long, leaves 14-22 paired, leaflets 15-30 toothed, terminal leaflets 10-40 x 5-20 mm, sparsely pilose to sericeous below.   (2)
       
2 (1) Leaflets ovate to ovate-elliptic, sparsely pilose below, flowers 4-10 arranged in panicles, outer calyces 3-4-fid, achenes 1-1.2 x 0.7-0.8 mm, ovoid, light brown with reddish brown lines on the surface, not beaked.   16 Potentilla polyphylla
+ Leaflets oblong or oblong-lanceolate, densely sericeous below, inflorescence generally 2-flowered, outer calyces generally entire, achenes 2-3 x 2 mm, subglobose, black, smooth and beaked.   17 Potentilla peduncularis
