Erect or climbing shrubs. Leaves mostly unipinnate, stipulate, stipules adnate to the petiole (except in Rosa persica). Epicalyx absent. Stamens many, inserted around the disc which has the hypanthium. Pistils many, enclosed by the hypanthium, apocarpous, ovule 1, styles protruding through the orifice of the disc, free or united into a column. Achenes remain enclosed in fleshy hypanthium x=7.
