Larger tree, with spreading branches. Leaves opposite, 12-25 x 6-10 cm elliptic-oblong, ovate or ± ovate cordate, acute-acuminate, entire, thick and leathery, glabrous above, pubescent beneath with 8-12 lateral nerves, petiole 1.5-2 cm. Inflorescence terminal, globose, peduncled head, 2.5-5 cm in diameter. Flowers minute-orange-yellow in colour, fragrant. Calyx minute. Corolla-lobes 5, short, tube c. 2 mm long. Stamens on the throat of the corolla tube. Fruit an aggregate of capaules packed into a fleshy globose mass or head, 5-7.5 cm in diameter, yellow when ripe, edible.
Type: Rheede, Hon. Ind. Malabar. 3: tab. 33, “Katou-tsjaka” (1678-1703).
Distribution: Indigenous to sub Himalayan tract from Nepal to Assam and South India, cultivated in Lahore and else where.
The wood is moderately strong and is used for making beams and rafters.
