Stipes stout, 25-50 cm long, covered with large, lanceolate, reddish-brown scales at base (scales 2-
4 cm long); upper stipe and rachis without scales; fronds monomorphic, lanceolate, bipinnatifid, 30-
100 cm long; texture subcoriaceous; pinnae linear, cut 3/4 way to costa; median pinnae 15-30 cm long,
4-9 cm wide (rarely to 40 cm long, by 12 cm broad); segments on either side of costa about equal; with
a single large scaly bud just below apex of frond, attached to rachis base of 2nd or 3rd pinna. Sori
parallel to costules, linear, discrete; indusia linear, opening towards costules.

Distributed in Japan, mainland China and the Philippines. Taiwan, at 1,200-15,00 m altitude
mountain, habitat like that of W. orientalis var. formosana.
