Woodwardia J. Sm.
狗脊蕨屬
Terrestrial ferns, often large; caudex usually short, erect, scaly; stipes tufted; or rhizome creeping
and stipes distant (Chieniopteris). Fronds usually deeply bipinnatifid; pinnatifid in some species
(Chieniopteris); usually monomorphic (except in Lorinseria); veins forming a single row of costal and
costular areolae, other veins free or anastomosing (especially in Lorinseria & Chieniopteris). Sori
costal, linear, discrete, superfical or sunken in cavities, parallel to costa or costule.
About 12 species, five in Taiwan.
The genus Chieniopteris is probably distinct from Woodwardia even though we are treating it as a
section of Woodwardia. It differs in having a creeping rhizome, distant fronds, anastomosing venation,
type of scales at base of stipe, as well as form of frond.
