    Stems 20-150 cm long, glabrous, branched. Lower cauline leaves lanceolate; median leaves oblong-lanceolate, dentate or more often 3-5-partite, 4-13 cm long (petioles 0.8-2.5 cm long, more or less winged) terminal segments larger, oblong-lanceolate, dentate, lateral segments of 1-2 pairs, oblong-lanceolate, spreading; upper leaves smaller, dentate or trifid. Heads discoid, 7-8 mm across; peduncles 4-15 cm long. Involucral bracts herbaceous, 5-10, oblanceolate, 1.5-4.5 cm long in fruit, outer palea oblong, scarious, 9-11 mm long. Florets all bisexual, corolla tubular, 4-4.5 mm long, apex 4-dentate. Achenes compressed, brown, 7-11 mm long, retrorsely spinulose on margins and ribs, 2- or sometimes imperfectly 3- or 4-awned, pappus awns erect, 3-4 mm long.

    Eurasia, northern Africa and Australia. Taiwan, moist mountain trails in the north, rare.
