Senecio L.

Groudsel, ragwort


A very large genus of about 1,240 species, distributed throughout the world. Senecio species are especially abundant in the Mediterranean, South Africa, Temperate Asia and the Americas. 69 species in the FSU, according the latest taxonomic treatment. Most are of wide distribution, many occur in the Caucasus and also in Siberia and the Far East. Endemics occur in the Caucasus, in Central Asia, in Siberia and the Far East. Perennials or annuals. A few species are of ornamental value.
