Trees 6--15 m tall. Bark brown, irregularly fissured. Branchlets densely grayish yellow stellate pubescent. Winter buds conical, densely dark brown stellate pubescent. Petiole 1--2 cm; leaf blades of 2 forms; basal 2 leaves of each branchlet opposite, blade oblong to oblong-ovate, 8--12 X 5.5--10 cm; other leaves alternate, blade elliptic to elliptic-oblong, 5--15 X 5.5--10 cm; all leaf blades abaxially densely gray stellate tomentose, adaxially glabrous except veins, base cuneate to broadly cuneate, margin serrate, apex acute, secondary veins 7--9 pairs, tertiary veins subparallel. Racemes terminal or axillary, 6--15 cm, sometimes with 2 or 3 lateral racemes from near base of inflorescence. Pedicel 2--5 mm. Flowers fragrant, pendulous. Calyx campanulate, 4--6 mm, densely stellate tomentose; teeth 5 or 6, subulate, unequal. Corolla tube shorter than lobes; lobes obovate-elliptic to elliptic, 10--15 X 4.5--5 mm. Filaments slender, sparsely stellate pubescent. Style equal to corolla. Fruit ovoid, ca. 8 mm in diam., densely gray stellate tomentose, rugose, apex shortly pointed. Seeds brown, smooth. Fl. Apr-Jul, fr. Nov-Oct.
