Erect or spreading annual herbs. Leaf mostly paripinnately compound, rachis ending in a bristle or tendril, rarely leaf imparipinnate; leaflets 2-several pairs, entire, stipels absent; stipules entire, dentate or semisagittate. Inflorescence axillary, few flowered, racemose or flower solitary, bract small deciduous, bracteoles absent. Calyx teeth subequal. Corolla white, blue or violet. Vexillum obovate or round, narrowed into a claw. Wing attached to the keel. Keel acute or beaked. Stamens diadelphous, 9+1, vexillary stamen free, sheath with an oblique mouth. Ovary subsessile, 2-ovuled, style somewhat flattened, bearded on the inside. Fruit compressed, 2-valved, 2-1-seeded, funicle dilated into an aril.
A genus with 5 species; distributed in S. Europe, the Mediterranean region, W.Asia and E.Africa; locally represented by one cultivated species.
