Trees, dioecious, spiny when young. Leaves alternate, glabrous. Flowers in clusters. Stamens numerous with a glandular disc at the base. Ovary on a disc, unilocular; style short; stigma. lobed. Fruit a berry. Seeds 2 8.
A genus of about l00 species in the tropical and the sub tropical regions except in Africa.
