Perennial with a stout woody rootstock covered by remains of leaves from previous years. Radical leaves about 1/2 to 1/3rd as long as the scape. with long patent hairs. Lamina upto 15 (-20) cm wide, suborbicular to subcordate or reniform, with a smaller rather narrow basal sinus, deeply 5-partite or 3-partite with ± deeply cut lateral segments, broad and acute with irregular teeth, hairy when young on upper surface, glabrescent later. Involucral leaves 3, sessile, sometimes connate at base, irregularly and ± deeply dentate, often partite. Peduncles numerous, of first and second order, sometimes bearing an involucel above with several pedicels. Length of peduncles and pedicels very variable. Flowers white, 2-3 cm in diameter. Sepals obovate to obong-obovate, acute or obtuse, glabrous on both sides. Carpels obovate to obovate-oblong, broadly winged. Style bent down over the ventral suture, tip ± erect.
