Small spiny shrub; spines axillary, straight 1.5-3 cm long; bark corky. Leaves 10-25 x 4-8 mm, opposite, entire, apiculate; petiole c. 1.5 mm long. Flowers c. 10 cm long and 4-5 cm across, white; pedicel c. 2 mm long, with red dots. Calyx-lobes 4, subulate. Corolla-tube pendulous, 7-10 cm long, glandular hairy within; lobes 4, c. 2 x 1 cm. Stamens 4-5, inserted at the base of corolla; anthers c. 1.2 cm long, apiculate. Ovary 2-loculed; style long exserted, branched into 2 stigmatic lobes. Fruit a berry, c. 5 cm long, yellow, edible.
Fl. Per.: June-August.
Type: ‘Habitat in Providentia’ [Bahamas].
Distribution: Indigenous to West Indies. Occasionally cultivated in Pakistan.
