Distribution: Europe, eastwards to Central Asian Mts., in the south to Turkey, Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Kashmir (?) and Tajikistan.

subsp. lacustris is reported by Dickoré (1995) from Baltistan, Ladakh and Kashmir. Despite the presence of 3 stigmas, these specimens are here included in subsp. hippolyti; see also Egorova (1976).
