Stem 5-10 mm diam., finely papillose, glaucous green. Sheaths greenish, sometimes with reddish tint. Inflorescence up to 65 mm; glume-like bracts with dark red barbs. Spikes mostly 2-4 together, some solitary; glumes 3-3.6 mm, sides with dark red barbs. Stigmas 2.

Fl. Per.: April - June.

Type: Baden (Germany)/Alsace (France), "Utrinque in stagnis et paludibus praesertim sylvaticis Rheno [Rhein] vicinis frequens".

In brackish water; lakes and streams, on marshy ground; Distribution: All Europe, east to Japan, in south to Turkey, Israel, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan to Ladakh.
