Perennial herbs. Roots fibrous. Main stems erect, often with subterranean rhizomes, glabrous or sparsely uncinate. Leaves usually petiolate; blade reduced towards inflorescence, lanceolate, apex acuminate, base cuneate; sheath cylindrical, overlapping, sparsely uncinate. Inflorescence a terminal thyrse, the cincinni mainly alternate or mainly subverticullate; peduncle covered with uncinate hairs; bracts lorate-lanceolate; bracteoles deltoid, infundibuliform, perfoliate; pedicel glabrous. Flowers actinomorphic, dimorphic, in functionally male flowers pistil abortive; sepals 3, free, white, persistent, elliptic, concave, apex obtuse, glabrous; petals 3, white, equal, oblanceolate; stamens 6, monomorphic or dimorphic with 3 staminodes, glabrous; ovary globose-ellipsoid; style glabrous. Capsules indehiscent, trilocular, each locule 5-8 seeded, indigo, metallic, globose. Seeds biseriate, polygonal, dorsiventral, scrobiculatus, embryotega dorsal, sunken, hilum punctiform.
Species ca. 17, distributed in tropical Africa, Asia, America and Australia; three species in Taiwan.
Clarke (1881) 依花構造的不同，在Pollia屬下再分兩組：Aclisia及Eupollia；Brücker (1930) 依據可孕雄蕊數的不同，將Aclisia提昇為一屬，但其他的形態及細胞學特徵皆無法區別，故多位學者 (Rao et al. 1968, Faden & Suda 1980) 仍採用較廣義的Pollia屬；Hsu (1971, 1978) 依循Clarke (1881) 的處理，將台灣的種類分置在兩個組之下；Hong (1974, 1997) 也依循Clarke (1881) 的處理，並依據國際植物命名法規將sect. Eupollia改為sect. Pollia；本研究依循Hong (1974, 1978)的處理。
